Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing and transformative technology that is changing the way we live and interact with others. It has revolutionized industries such as virtual assistance, self-driving cars, and advanced medical diagnosis.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai says that AI is one of the most important things humanity is working on, as it's more profound than electricity or fire. AI is not limited to machine learning and has several types, including expert systems, machine learning algorithms, and deep learning. These different types of AI have the potential to change the world.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the study and development of computer systems that mimic human intelligence. As technologies become more widely used in everyday life, it's important for you to understand how they work so that you can make informed decisions about them--and what those decisions mean for your job security or ability to compete in an ever-changing field.
The term Artificial Intelligence was first defined by Stanford Professor John McCarthy as "the science and engineering of making intelligent machines." The first AI program was written in 1951, and since then, there have been numerous advancements in the field such as expert systems in the 1970s, machine learning algorithms in the 1990s. Today, AI is used in various applications, including voice assistants, self-driving cars, and medical diagnosis.
What are the stages of Artificial Intelligence?
From the earliest beginning as a concept to natural language generation, AI has undergone several transitions. Whenever a new technology is developed, it creates a lot of excitement because of each application's unique capabilities. Here are the three stages of AI:
1. Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)
Artificial Narrow Intelligence is the first stage of development which can perform specific tasks with little reasoning. The everyday applications we see around, such as Siri, Alexa, and other AI tools, are an example of ANI, where the algorithm takes a specific command from the user, analyzes it, and gives the output.
They aren't capable of performing tasks that involve complex problem-solving. ANI can boost Drupal-based solutions’ performance with robust functionality such as image tagging, content summarization, and personalized recommendations.
2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
Artificial general Intelligence is the second stage of development which consists of a broad range of intellect associated with human reasoning. The technology will be capable of learning and adopting depending upon the changing environments and could bring a revolution in technology. There isn't any AGI system currently, and it remains a topic of debate among philosophers and scientists.
3. Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)
The final stage is the development of artificial super Intelligence that possesses Intellect greater than any human. ASI will have the ability to learn, adapt, and self-improve at an exponential rate. We are far from developing such systems as there is a lot of research that needs to be done on prior technologies. Undoubtedly, if technology is created, there will be an unprecedented change in human civilization.
Types of Artificial Intelligence:
Artificial Intelligence can be divided into various types, there are mainly two types of main categorization which are based on capabilities and functionally based on AI. Following is a flow diagram which explain the types of AI.
AI type-1: Based on Capabilities
1. Weak AI or Narrow AI:
Narrow AI refers to a type of Artificial Intelligence that is specifically designed to perform a single task with intelligence. It is the most widely available type of AI currently in use. As it is limited to performing only one task, it is also referred to as "Weak AI." This type of AI is trained for a particular task and can fail in unexpected ways if it goes beyond its boundaries.
Examples of Narrow AI include Apple's Siri, IBM's Watson supercomputer, and AI applications in playing chess, e-commerce site purchase suggestions, self-driving cars, speech recognition, and image recognition. However, it is important to note that Narrow AI operates within a pre-defined range of functions and cannot perform beyond its limitations.
2. General AI:
General AI refers to a type of intelligence that has the capability to perform any intellectual task with the same level of efficiency as a human being. The goal of General AI is to create a system that can think and reason like a human, independently.
Currently, no such system exists that can demonstrate General AI capabilities. The development of General AI is a focus of research efforts around the world, however, it is a challenging and time-consuming task to create such systems."
3. Super AI
Super AI refers to a hypothetical level of artificial intelligence where machines surpass human intelligence and possess cognitive abilities to perform tasks better than a human being. It is a manifestation of General AI.
Key features of Super AI include the ability to think, reason, solve problems, make decisions, plan, learn, and communicate independently. Despite being a fascinating concept, the development of Super AI is a formidable challenge that has yet to be achieved.
Artificial Intelligence type-2: Based on functionality
1.Reactive Machines
These are the simplest forms of Artificial Intelligence. They do not have the capability to store memories or past experiences and make decisions based on them. Instead, they solely respond to current situations and take the best possible action in real-time. Examples of Reactive Machines include IBM's Deep Blue and Google's AlphaGo.
2.Limited Memory
Limited Memory machines are a step up from Reactive Machines, as they have the ability to store past experiences or data for a limited period of time. This stored information is used by the system to make decisions, but only for a short time.
Self-driving cars are an example of Limited Memory AI systems, as they store information such as the speed of nearby vehicles, distance to other cars, speed limits, and other navigation data.
3. Theory of Mind
Theory of Mind Artificial Intelligence aims to have the capability to comprehend human emotions, beliefs, and engage in social interactions like a human. While this type of AI is still under development, researchers are continually working to improve and advance its capabilities."
4. Self-Awareness
Self-Awareness AI is a future vision of Artificial Intelligence, where machines will possess their own consciousness, emotions, and self-awareness. They will surpass human intelligence, and have an advanced level of smartness. Although this concept of AI is currently hypothetical, researchers are exploring the possibilities of its development in the future.
